Homemade play dough day!

The kids and I were still home-bound a couple days ago with a recovering sick kid. The second project of the week: Grandma Young's homemade play dough recipe. Its a great recipe because it's all "edible" but doesn't taste yummy enough for them to just sit and eat. This play dough stays moist, doesn't crumble, and works great for my kids. One batch was enough to make two different colors, one for each kid.

Here's Grandma's recipe and some pictures of our play dough adventure:

Ingredients:
2 C Flour
1 C Salt
1 T Alum (pickling salt, can be found in the seasoning aisle)

2 T Baby Oil
Food Coloring (you pick the color)

Directions:
  1. Mix the flour, salt, and alum together in a medium glass bowl with a wooden spoon.
  2. Slowly stir the water in making a wet paste (it will dry quickly into a play dough like substance due to the sodium)
  3. Make a "well" in the dough and add baby oil
  4. Knead
  5. Once ball of dough is formed, and has the consistency of play dough, make another "well"
  6. Add a 4-5 drops of food coloring (I used the gel food coloring but I'm sure either works). Add more food coloring until you find you desired color play dough.
  7. Hand over to toddlers and enjoy a book for 20 minutes.
  8. Have fun cleaning up their mess ;)
Mix dry ingredients
Add water slowly
Stir until wet paste is formed

TaDa!
Hours upon hours of fun!
